How does Moonshadow support wildlife and their habitat?
We specialise in flying foxes and microbats. We rescue other smaller animals and some waterbirds when we can, out of our peak bat rescue season, but majority of our time is taken up with Grey-headed Flying Fox rescue. I started as a vaccinated rescuer in 2017. Once people realised we were vaccinated we began to get all the 'bat calls'. We soon realised there was a huge gap in the rescue field for a specialised bat rescue and shelter in the Gippsland area.
My partner then joined me on rescues and that year we had an extreme heat event. We were thrown in the deep end so to say, as no-one else around knew what to do or how to help our precious flying foxes, and we soon set up Moonshadow Flying Fox Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre. We've been very busy, ever since, rescuing rehabilitating, working with schools and TAFE's and other organisations, giving talks to vet nurses and working with our local Shire of Wellington on a management plan and extreme weather events, doing community Bat Chats over Summer, educating the community through information stalls, and other groups, whenever the opportunity arises. And importantly, offering training and mentoring new bat rescuers in our area. We are monitoring local camps.
Education and information sharing is the key to helping our precious IUCN listed, threatened Species survival and changing community perceptions.
What advice would you give the public?
If you dont know nuch about bats, look them up. They are facinationg, cute and loving mammals. They are a keystone species. Its important we understand them and learn to live with them.
ALWAYS call specialist bat rescuers if you find a bat low down or on the ground. NEVER try to rescue yourself. We are always available for advise.
No touch, no risk. For your safety and the bats.

Lend a paw by purchasing a Wombaroo Gift Voucher for Moonshadow Flying Fox Rescue.
For many wildlife rehabilitators, having access to life-saving food or equipment is often a necessity they struggle to afford. These dedicated individuals devote their lives to assisting wildlife, typically funding their efforts themselves and covering costs for baby formula, medicine, and supplies from their own pockets. Unfortunately, they receive little to no government support for their crucial work.Gift vouchers make a significant difference for carers, whether it's purchasing a $20 Wombaroo voucher for a tiny joey or $1,000 voucher to support a mob of injured Kangaroo’s, every contribution plays a vital role in the recovery and survival of these precious creatures. By providing these vouchers, you empower rehabilitators to continue their invaluable work, offering second chances to animals in need.
