Waratah Wildlife Hospital Project
Warratah Wildlife Hospital Project
Warriors 4 Wildlife have recieved a very generous donation to our Support 4 Shelters program from the late Kathy Mackintosh which included funds specifically dedicated to the construction of a new wildlife Hospital for Waratah Wildlife Shelter.
Waratah Wildlife Shelter, located in Launching Place has been caring for and rehabilitating injured, sick or orphaned native wildlife for over 7 years. Caring for species such as wombats, possums, gliders and koalas. The shelter is an integral part of the community aiding and protecting native wildlife in the area.
Raewyn Jeganathan, owner and operator of the shelter is currently relocating to a property just outside of the Warburton Town centre. The new property is nestled amongst the trees in Big Pats Creek and backs on to the Yarra State Forest. The shelter is expanding with plans of specialised rehabilitation facilities, larger wombat enclosures and aviaries and a purpose built Wildlife Hospital.
The Wildlife Hospital will provide a space to rehabilitate large native animals while in recovery from injury, with an examination area fitted out with equipment and medical supplies needed for treatment. The hospital will also offer an essential after-hours service.
Shortages of facilities such as this in the Yarra Valley can often lead to the unnecessary euthanasia of our local wildlife. The Waratah Wildlife Hospital will ensure more animals are able to come into care for rehabilitation. The centre will allow more volunteer opportunities and provide more education on wildlife within the community.
Warriors 4 Wildlife believe this hospital will be an essential service to the community and will help protect and preserve native wildlife in the area. The shelter will provide a complete sanctuary enabling animals to be rehabilitated in a safe environment, from a bottle-feeding joey all the way to an adult that is ready for release back to their natural habitat.
Thanks to the generous donation from Kathy the basic structure is well underway. Warriors 4 Wildlife would like to continue the support for Waratah Wildlife and raise additional funds to see this project to completion. There is a lot more work that needs to be done:
Plumbing
Electrical Works/Lighting
Painting
Water tanks
Enclosures to house the animals in care
Shelving
Kitchenette
Examination area with medical equipment and supplies
